Character
Character Name: Napstablook
Canon: Undertale
Canon Point: Post true pacifist ending after going on tour with Mettaton and Shyren.
Type: Canon character.
Age: Canon is vague about literally everyone's ages, but headcanon is that they're anywhere from 19-22 years old or the monster developmental/emotional equivalent.

History/Key Points: Okay so:
  • Long ago, two races ruled over earth...
  • No one really knows where ghosts come from, headcanon is that they just kinda spawn outta nowhere and adopt each other as "cousins", but I'm going to be intentionally vague about this
  • Ghosts are also probably not dead people in this canon; they're just a type of monster
  • Napstablook is a simple ghost, having grown up and spent most of their life on a family-owned snail farm near the garbage dumps in the marshlands known as Waterfall, because that clearly makes sense
  • Most ghosts in canon seem to want to eventually find bodies and become corporeal, but Blooky seems fairly comfortable with being intangible
  • One by one, Blooky's family members all left the farm to pursue other things, eventually leaving only them and their closest cousin to run the farm
  • As their family members leave one by one, Blooky asks their cousin if they want to leave, too. Their cousin promises never to leave Blooky behind.
  • Blooky and said cousin (who would later become Mettaton, but whose birth name is unknown) spent most of their time taking care of the snails, occasionally making music and doing practicing-for-fun performances for the other monsters nearby in their spare time
  • Mettaton (as I'm just going to call him) was interested in human culture, having seen artifacts from the human world show up in the garbage dump near their home. It's unclear if Blooky is also interested, but they most likely at least know a little bit about human popular culture.
  • Mettaton decides to start a human fan club and befriends the only other person who shows up. She eventually decides to help Mettaton with his need to have a body and feel comfortable in his (metaphorical) skin
  • Now that he felt like he could pursue his dreams of stardom, Mettaton decided to break his promise leave the snail farm (and Blooky) behind and begin his show business career in Hotland. It's implied that Mettaton fell out of touch with Blooky since then and that they haven't talked in a long while.
  • Having lost their closest family and the only person they really hung out with, Blooky slips into depression, becoming more reclusive than they were originally
  • They sometimes go to the Ruins for alone time. During one of these trips they accidentally meet (and befriend) a human named Frisk, who is also the player character.
  • They later invite Frisk to their home to hang out, after accidentally saving Frisk from a really annoying miniboss
  • Later, Frisk's journey takes them to Mettaton, who tries to kill them on live television
  • THE RATINGS GO OFF THE CHARTS, prompting Mettaton to allow one lucky viewer the chance to call him before he uses Frisk's soul to cross the barrier that keeps all monsters trapped underground, leave the underworld behind forever, and become  a star on the surface
  • Napstablook is the first caller, and tells Mettaton how much they'll miss him and how happy they were watching his shows. Mettaton, touched by this, decides to stay underground.
  • Mettaton makes up with Napstablook, and decides to recruit them and Shyren, an old friend of theirs, into a band he's starting
  • After Frisk breaks the barrier in the true ending, the three of them go on tour on the surface, performing for both humans and monsters

Personality: Blooky is, first and foremost, extremely shy and unsure of themselves. Years spent being alone on the snail farm after everyone else left without a trace has made them believe that no one is really interested in them or their lives: if you go to Napstablook's house after befriending them in the Ruins, they act surprised that you took them up on their invitation. This also comes right after a scene where Blooky disappears after interrupting your fight with a miniboss you would have otherwise been eternally locked in battle with, where they freaked out and thought they were interrupting you. It's unclear how much of Blooky's shyness is natural introversion and how much of it is social anxiety, but I figure it's some combination of both. To a certain extent, they seem to enjoy solitary pleasures such as laying on the floor and listening to/making music. At the same time, it's clear that they want to have more friends and that they're desperately lonely: when they call Mettaton if you beat him pacifistically, they talk about how happy they were to watch his show, and phone calls with other characters in the game reveal that they've slipped into depression ever since their cousin (who these characters don't know is actually Mettaton) left the farm.

It also goes without saying that Blooky is highly sensitive, pretty fragile, and honestly kind of a doormat. They're almost always seen crying in-game, apologize frequently, and bend over backwards to avoid making others feel uncomfortable at their own expense. The prime example for this comes when you first meet them at the beginning of the game: if you decide to beat Napstablook up instead of cheering them, they reveal that you can't actually hurt them: they were just lowering their HP because they didn't want to be rude. It's clear that Napstablook doesn't think they really deserve much, and since being overlooked is apparently normal for them, well... a little genuine kindness goes a long way towards befriending this ghost, or even just paying some modicum of attention to them. Seriously. Even though they miss Mettaton terribly due to Mettaton's own douchery, they still don't seem to resent him very much, if at all. They even let the player character hang out at their house if the player beat them up at the beginning, even going so far as to point the player in its direction, which is kind of sad? They have some serious self-esteem issues and don't think that they deserve the love and kindness that someone like them actually does.

Finally, as a side note, Blooky has a pretty keen interest in a few artistic fields, such as tearbending fashion design and, more notably, sound mixing and music. Unlike their cousin, however, they seem more interested in the actual creation aspect than they are in the attention it draws.

Gem: As Blooky spends more time in-game, I'd like for them to become more confident and assertive, and less anxious about opening up to people. As such, I think sardonyx would be an ideal gem for them, since it boosts optimism and confidence--things Blooky desperately needs. Also because their cousin is basically Sardonyx anyway.

It'd be a heart-shaped gem (since Undertale uses hearts to represent souls) placed in the middle of their...ghostness? Basically in the general center of their body, to match up with Mettaton EX's stomach heart.

Power Considerations: For now, let's just focus on the basics.
  • Telekinesis
  • Acid tears, can cause damage up to a second-degree burn and corroding non-living things.
  • The ability to conjure harmless gray text that floats around and does nothing else besides be kinda annoying/distracting
The latter two powers are more or less canon, while I figured telekinesis would just be useful if they continue being incorporeal.

Extra: Blooky's incorporeal and stuff? I guess that counts.

Writing Sample: Test drive thread; I'd like to point you in the direction of Alice and Mettaton's threads.
